The MENHIR, leading group of the Sardinian young hip-hop movement, create a musical but also social, cultural and artistic case, by expressing their own creativity through music, dancing and writing. Their album features fifteen songs in Sardinian dialect of Nuoro and in Italian, strong as the old menhir, also called “sos predas fittas” (‘stones sunk into the ground’) in Sardinian dialect, examples of Sardinian people’s solidity, pride, dignity, ability to resist and face the passing of time.
The band from Nuoro was born in 1997 and it has been the first group to mix the sounds from sardinian traditional music culture with the new sounds of hip hop, rapping in sardinian dialect and achieving a unique musical melange. Today Menhir come out with a new record tracking down the roots of their island's musical heritage. The ethnic music becomes a source of inspiration, while the lyrics are still centred on political and social matters. The beats mainly come from funk and jazz, while there are some samples also of traditional sardinian music. Besides, there is a special attention to the voice, which tends to reproduce the guttural chants of the tenores.
