The performances on this disc were given by the younger Dagar Brothers during a trip to Paris in 1987. The recordings were made by the late Deben Bhattacharya (1921-2001), the internationally renowned musicologist, in a Paris cellar.
The first item on the disc is sung in Lalit, an intensely beautiful raga perfectly suited to the devotional spirit of dhrupad. According to tradition it is best suited to the hours just before sunrise. The performance consists of a full Dagar-style alaap and a dhrupad in chautaal.
The second item is sung in Sohini. Like Lalit, it is normally performed in the hours just before dawn. In this performance the singers depart from the more conventional dhrupad structure, opting to sing a much shorter alaap followed by a dhrupad in chautaal.
Pakhawaj accompaniment is ably provided by Pandit Mohan Shyam Sharma who in the course of his career has accompanied several generations of the Dagar family.
