Ferra vs Ferra features twelve brand new creations of two extraordinary guitarists, the brothers Massimo and Bebo Ferra, two of the most gifted Italian jazz musicians. In this record the acoustic element prevails, even though they are both acoustic and electric guitarists. The tracks include both the melodic and the contemporary dimension, but one never prevails over the other. What links the two is a third vital element: the improvisation, that combines, separates, nourishes fingers and heart’s phrasings.
Ferra vs Ferra features twelve brand new creations of two extraordinary guitarists, the brothers Massimo and Bebo Ferra, some of the most gifted Italian musicians that have been models for jazz guitarists all over Sardinia since the early 80s. After twenty years of independent activity and geographic distance (Massimo in Sardinia, Bebo in Milan), the “jazz brothers” met in Cagliari to work on a new idea, that had been in their mind since 2006, when they performed at Berchidda’s Festival ‘Time in Jazz’. That was an exclusive occasion, a great concert, with thousands of fans coming from all over the island. A strong motivating force that led them to unify their skills and give life to a new album with a simple and very clear title: Ferra vs Ferra. In this record the acoustic element prevails, even though they are both acoustic and electric guitarists. The tracks, all written and arranged together , include both the melodic and the contemporary dimension, but one never prevails over the other. What links the two is a third vital element: the improvisation, that combines, separates, nourishes fingers and heart’s phrasings. “Ferra vs Ferra” has been a very intense experience that made them being attuned to each other, artistically and emotionally, as if all this time had never passed.
The two brothers from Cagliari started working together in 1979, developing their careers with the group “Quintetto”, then they chose two different directions. Massimo teaches in music schools (he’s now jazz-guitar teacher at some seminars in Nuoro and at the Conservatory “Pier Luigi da Palestrina” in Cagliari) and has had very important partners (among the others Paolo Fresu, Rita Marcotulli, Bruno Tommaso, Elena Ledda, Gianni Cazzola, Paolino Dalla Porta, Mike Mainieri). With his trio he won the first prize at Sant’ Anna Arresi’s contest, after which he recorded the cd “La strana storia di Teddy Luck”, then he won also Posada’s contest. Bebo, guitarist and composer, opted for a milder teaching activity (he runs jazz courses and advanced-harmony courses at CPM in Milan and regular master classes at ‘Scuola Civica Monteverdi’ in Cremona) and a more intense artistic production, working with several national and international notable musicians, such as Franco D’Andrea, Enrico Rava, Paolino Dalla Porta, Paolo Fresu, Alex Foster, Pietro Tonolo, Gianni Cazzola, Mauro Negri, Michael Rosen, Alex Foster, John Clark, Paul McCandless, Billy Cobham, Jaribu Shaid, John Stowell, Enrico Pieranunzi, Steve Grossmann, Maria Pia de Vito, Billy Cobham, Dedè Ceccarelli, Franco Ambrosetti, Emanuel Bex, Carol Welsman, Adam Nussbaum, Gianluigi Trovesi, Antonello Salis, with whom he performed at important festivals all over the world. Jazz-guitar teacher at the conservatory in Milan, he ran seminars and master classes in many Italian cities and abroad.
