Trombonist and composer Gianluca Petrella was born in Bari, Italy, in 1975. After graduating from the Bari Conservatory in 1994, he began playing in saxophonist Roberto Ottaviano's band and became lead trombonist in the OFP Orchestra, a gig that introduced him to Carla Bley and Steve Coleman. In 1997 he joined trumpeter Enrico Rava’s band. He is internationally considered one of the best young jazz trombonists. In 2001 he won Django d’Or Award as well as Musica Jazz’s annual critics poll as Best Young Talent.[2] In 2006 and 2007 he won in Down Beat's Best Emerging Artist category the award of Best Trombonist. He has worked with many international musicians including Joey Calderazzo, Jimmy Owens, Greg Osby, Carla Bley, Pat Metheny, Marc Ducret, Manu Dibango, Nicola Conte, Bobby Previte and Enrico Rava.
His music has many different references: Duke Ellington, Ben Webster, Thelonius Monk, Gil Evans and last but not least Sun Ra, one of the most extravagant figure in jazz that has inspired his last project, the Cosmic Band. The Cosmic Band reformulates Sun Ra masterpieces giving each piece its own new personality while keeping its original spirit. The mixture is explosive: an encounter between free improvisation, Frank Zappa and Duke Ellington. Musical worlds apparently far apart live together in this music, filtred by Petrella's strong personality.
