Mugham of Azerbaijan, a “masterpiece of oral cultural heritage of the humankind” (UNESCO, 2003), is an important part of the national art music of oral tradition. Mugham implies a big repertoire of pieces of various musical nature, genres, and length.
Caravan of Mugham melodies carries the pearls of the Mugham repertoire, beautiful lyrical pieces highly popular with the native listeners and the performers. Their selection is supposed to show the diversity of melodic forms, musical instruments and types of music ensembles practiced at the art of Mugham. The disc also introduces a number of professional performers of Mugham - singers and instrumentalists of different generations, each of which is distinguished for own performing style and artistic personality.

Caravan of Mugham melodies is the third volume of the series “Traditional music of Azerbaijan”, and, along with the first two volumes, it gives the Western listeners some broader idea of Azerbaijani mugham and its musical milieu.
The program of the CD includes various important Azerbaijani artists, both singers and instrumentalists, covering different aspects of the Mugham repertoire.
From the beautiful voice of the affirmed star Gülyanaq Mammadova, that opens the CD with a rare duet with Balaban (a close relative to Armenian duduk and Turkish Mey) to the new rising star Kamila Nabiyeva, the most interesting new voice emerging from the Azerbaijan scene in the recent years to the male singer Rovshan Mammadov. Ramiz Guliyev presents the most important national instrument, the tar, in a duo with Shirzad Hasanov’s naqara (percussion), while virtuoso Munis Sharifov enchanted with his lyrical kamancha (a kind of upright fiddle).
