Tibetan singer Namgyal Lhamo is popular across the globe thanks to her vocal talents. Her new cd is the first in a trilogy, dedicated to various Tibetan music styles. Namgyal Lhamo is born into a family with a strong musical tradition and she herself was selected at an early age to join the Tibetan Institute for Performing Arts (TIPA ). She trained for over fourteen years under the great masters of Tibetan Opera and Classical Music. She left the institute as a teacher, dancer and opera singer.
Tibetans are a spiritual people and religion is closely linked with all aspects of daily life. Namgyal came to realise that classical and most of the folk songs ar not just beautiful songs, but that they are musical offerings through which one can express one’s spirituality. Thus ‘Musical Offerings’ became the subtitle of a trilogy dedicated to various Tibetan music styles..This first part contains traditional music only, hailing from three regions in Tibet.
It is a solo album, Namgyal accompanying herself on dranyen (Tibetan lute) and dulcimer. She also plays the flute. Ranging from the rhythmic songs from the western part of Tibet to the cantilenes from the east: Namgyal is very convincing with her beautiful, intense style of singing.
Improvisation is inherent to all Tibetan folk music and is seen as essential to keep it alive. Modest Namgyal now increasingly dares to include some personal accents in the songs she wishes to preserve.
