The Farewell Concert. Had they split up around the time of their allotted Rock 'n' Roll lifespan - say, around 1990 - Chumbawamba would probably be getting back together about now to play some comeback shows. There'd be one or two people who'd actually played in the band at some point along with some session musicians in nuns habits and a bank manager who could do a passable impersonation of Dunstan. Instead they chose to bludgeon their way through three decades armed only with conviction, humour, pig-headedness and a copy of Lenny Bruce's autobiography. Which brings us to City Varieties, 31st October, 2012, everyone gathering together to throw dirt on the coffin and celebrate at the wake (sandwiches and sausages-on-sticks provided). The truth is (and this may sound casual and off-hand for a summary of 30 years) this band was almost always a laugh, and always worth its while. It almost always did what it was supposed to do, and was never boring, or pointless, or ordinary. Mind you, thirty years later and still the majority of people can't spell or say the band's name properly.
