MELECH MECHAYA are celebrating their 10th anniversary with the new CD Aurora, the band’s fourth musical project and their most surprising, innovative and original work ever, pushing the boundaries of Klezmer music towards a sound that is uniquely their own.
Their highly personal approach combines the beauty of the compositions with a lighthearted mood that is thrilling to experience at live performances.
MELECH MECHAYA (me-LEKH me-KHAH-yah) means in Hebrew The Party Kings, an apt title for this unusual Portuguese band. MELECH MECHAYA turn their concerts into a non-stop party where the audience laughs, dances, participates, and gets involved in an irresistible performance.
MELECH MECHAYA are celebrating their 10th anniversary with the new CD Aurora, the band’s fourth musical project. The album was mixed by Tony Harris (who worked with groups such as R. E. M., Sinead O'Connor and The Verve) and features special guests: Filipe Melo (piano), Noiserv (vocals) and Lamari de Chambao (vocals).
The previous albums on Felmay Records, Melech Mechaya and Strange People, were highly successful and presented at over 150 concerts in 10 countries across 3 continents.
With Aurora, MELECH MECHAYA are back with their most surprising, innovative and original work ever, pushing the boundaries of Klezmer music towards a sound that is uniquely their own.
The MELECH MECHAYA project was founded in 2006 in Lisbon by its current members Miguel Veríssimo (clarinet), João Graça (violin), André Santos (guitar), João Novais (double bass), and Francisco Caiado (percussion).
Klezmer music, the powerful Jewish tradition from Central and Eastern Europe, continues to be the basis for creating a repertoire of original compositions.
Their highly personal approach combines the beauty of the compositions with a lighthearted mood that is thrilling to experience at live performances.
In addition to their ongoing concerts in their homeland Portugal, MELECH MECHAYA have performed extensively in Spain, as well as across the globe, in Croatia, Cape Verde, Brazil, Sweden, Finland, Belgium and Austria, in open-air festivals, theatres, metro stations, historic buildings... enchanting audiences and captivating the press.
This new record shows the band’s maturity, their skill in composing and arranging music inspired by the Klezmer tradition, enriching this legacy with new and fresh compositions. The audacity of the arrangements, the interaction between the instruments, and the exciting mood, demonstrate the high level of creativity and confidence that the band has reached.
