The musical meeting of PRADEEP BAROT, master of the Sarod (string instrument in the Northern Indian classical tradition) with one of his best students, Riccardo Battaglia, in a duet (Jugalbandi) playing two major ragas of Indian classical repertoire. Raga Bageshri and Raga Abhogi are here presented in their complete classical form, while a third Raga (Kafi) is presented in a compressed form dhun.

Sarod is today one of the most popular classical instruments in North India. The beautiful and mellow sound of this fretless lute can be soft and smooth at times, but also powerful , energetic and percussive. Sarod owes its modern form to Allauddhin Khan, a legendary musician who, more than anyone else, shaped North Indian instrumental music during the 20th Century.
The beautiful and sweet sound of this fretless lute, with Central Asian origins, can be soft and smooth or powerful, energetic and percussive.

In Indian music, raga is a musical tale, the exploration of a melodic universe and the way for artists to express their creativity poetically through musical improvisation within established rules.

Raga, the main form of classical music nowadays, consists of several parts: Alap (slow introduction), jor (evolution of Alap, with a scanning rhythm (tala) more evident) and a slow gat (composition and improvisation) , followed by a faster gat.

The three ragas presented in the CD, Bageshri, Abhogi and Kafi are night ragas, based on Thaat (mode) Kafi, a scale quite widespread in Hindustani music (the Northern Indian classical style), similar to the Doric mode of the Western system. Each raga has a unique and specific way to treat the notes of the scale, the compositions and improvisation, thus generating different emotions and states of mind in the listener.

Since four decades, PRADEEP BAROT is a disciple of the legendary Smt. Annapurna Devi. Poet of sarod and leading classical musician of India, he has embodied and enriched the finest instrumental tradition of the Indian subcontinent, carrying the name of Maihar Gharana (school).

Multi-instrumentalist and composer, RICCARDO BATTAGLIA has been Pradeep Barot’s disciple since 2001. Beside performing world wide, composing and teaching, Riccardo has been committed to researching, understanding and supporting Indian music for over twenty years.

FEDERICO SANESI. a Disciple of Pandit Sankha Chatterjee, I. Savoia, E. Lucchini and D. Searcy, has played and recorded tabla with many important musicians and groups in Italy and abroad, including Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ritwik Sanyal, Shujaat Husain Khan, Dino Saluzzi, John Taylor, Maria Pia de Vito, and Stephen James. Federico teaches tabla at Vicenza Conservatorium.
