ZSARATNOK is probably the best well-known group of traditional Balkan music today in activity.
Founded twelve years ago in Hungary by Nikola Parov ZSARATNOK plays acoustic music from the Balkans: Bulgarian, Rumanian, Serbia, Macedonian, Croatian, Greek, Albanian, etc. An troubled where the East and the West meets. An area we read daily on the newspapers. An area that ZSARATNOK dreams how it could be. A bridge between the exotic colours of Middle East and Asia and the flavour of South Europe, a meeting place for sounds and cultures, a romantic Garden of Eden.
The group uses more than twenty instruments on the stage during his concerts, presenting mostly traditional instrumental but also new compositions that mix contemporary and modern music with old styles.
The Balkan Legend is a good example of their style, or better styles. The repertoire includes two traditional instrumental from Rumania and Thracia and four new compositions by Nikola Parov performed by the most updated line up of the group centred around the string instrument: gadulka, baglama, tambura, buzuki, tamburitza
