Quartet features the current 4-piece line-up of the Love of Life Orchestra.
On this recording, the lively, physical aspect of my music is brought up front. The band was recorded live-in-the-studio, with the rhythm section playing together in tight grooves. "Blue" Gene Tyranny, my collaborator of over 20 years, is on piano and has some wonderful solos. Jeffrey Berman is on drums and percussion, providing solid time and poignant musical commentary. Paul Nowinski, on bass, is quite inventive and a dedicated member of the group. I am playing sopranino sax, tenor sax and organ. In this recording, I focus much more on my saxophone than in my earlier recordings, in which it is treated largely orchestrally.
The compositions explore a full range of emotions and ideas, with influences ranging from Central Europe to Asia to Africa. I think there is a playfulness as well as lyricism in this music. I hope the listener will enjoy and appreciate the directness and the unity of ensemble and sound".
