Although this recording is primarily a tribute to Vilayat Khan and his enduring legacy, almost could be written in praise of his accompanist, the tabla master Pandit Kishan Maharaj. Pandit Kishan Maharaj has established himself as one of India's greatest artists, so its fitting that this recording brings together two of the most revered veterans of Indian music. Navras have released both the CD and DVD of the same performance. One of the many noteworthy features of this recording is Vilayat Khan's choice of ragas. Here we have perhaps the grandest and noblest of them all (Darbari Kanada) followed by a favourite among favourites (Bhairavi). Western music lovers might ponder a juxtaposition of the best of Bach followed by the best of Mozart!
