After the extraordinary success of her previous album Rosa Resolza, for which she received two prestigious awards (The Targa Tenco award in 2007 and The Loano Prize in 2008) Elena Ledda, the voice of Sardinia, is back with her new album, Cantendi a Deus, dedicated entirely to religious songs.
This is a work of great emotional and transcendental expressiveness, which owes its success to much painstaking research into traditional religious songs, their social role, but more importantly, their powerful ability to move and touch the heart. “Cantendi a Deus” sets off on a innovative journey through original songs sang by Elena's intense voice, displaying her respect for tradition, while being driven by the contemporary.

As she herself says << In the album's sleeve notes, this is clearly explained. It starts with a quote from Fabrizio De Andrè : “.”If you hadn't been God's child, you would still be mine.” - I have always felt that this quote expresses my approach to my own belief. I believe in Mary's suffering as woman and mother. And I believe in Christ's passion as man and son, regardless of His natural divinity. Our need for the spiritual realm comes from the God we believe in, even if we say we believe in no god at all. We still crave all things spiritual and need to 'feed' and satisfy this desire. I believe that we are living through times that, more than ever before, call for a profound sense of “spirituality.” It is from this need, going beyond my own purely artistic motives, that has led me to take this passionate journey through the spiritual world of Sardinia.
The record, which was first performed at the Basilica of San Saturnino, Cagliari, during the European Jazz Expo, on 19 November 2009, boasts a cast of ten of the most important internationally-renowned artists to be found in Sardinia; Elena Ledda, Simonetta Soro, and Rossella Faa, voices, Mauro Palmas on mandole and mandoloncello, Marcello Peghin on guitar, Gavino Murgia on sax, Silvano Lobina on bass, Andrea ruggeri on percussion, the male voice choir Su Cuncordu ‘e su Rosariu from S. Lussurgiu, actress Lia Careddu, and Michele Palmas, artistic production, recording, mixing and sound.
