In 2019 Orchestra Bailam celebrates 30 years of activity with the new album "Trallalero Levantìn" which is the ideal continuation of the highly acclaimed "Galata". Orchestra Bailam and Canterini Genovesi create a fascinating and powerful dialogue between Middle Eastern music and Trallalero, the extraordinary Genoese polyphony, unique in the Mediterranean Sea. An artistic invention that is a mutual exchange inside the path of popular music, not only in defense of tradition, but also a starting point for a new growth and coexistence, an innovation that means to become the tradition of tomorrow.
Orchestra Bailam, after the acclaimed “Galata" continues the trip back in time into the Levantine cities : Smyrne, Thessaloniki, Istanbul, where the Italian presence from Genoa has had great importance. Levantine people were the heirs of Genoese and Venetian tradesmen thet had settled as early as the 12th century in the most important Middle East harbours. The outcome was the creation of a cosmopolitan society thanks to a very peculiar system of social and commercial deals and agreements with the Ottoman Empire. As a result, a particular culture was born, from a European origin and at the same time owing much to Christian, Anatolian,Sepharditic Jewish, Orthodox Byzantine and Ottoman Muslim roots. Greeks, Turks, Jews, Arab, Italians, Armenians, British, French, Russians, in spite of their differences and rivaliers, will always keep a bridge ending only with the prevailing nationalistic drifts in the 20th century. At the end of the 19th century the Levantine people from Genoese origin in Galata were about 7.000 and in Smyrne 6.000. Even now, in spite of a smaller presence, there is a very active Levantine community in Smyrne and Istanbul, made up of memories of a vital presence that has managed to keep a bond between past and present. In this context Orchestra Bailam and Canterini Genovesi create a dialogue between Middle eastern music and Trallalero, the extraordinary Genoese polyphony, unique in the Mediterranean Sea. An artistic invention that is a mutual exchange inside the path of popular music, not only in defense of the tradition, but also as a starting point for a new growth and coesistence, an innovation that means to become tomorrow’s tradition.
