Non tanto una Big Band quanto un piccolo stato indipendente. Questo è Bellowhead. Bellowhead è un gruppo di 11 elementi che sta spingendo le frontiere della musica di tradizione inglese in territori dove pochi, fino ad oggi, avevano osato spingerla. Profondamente legata alla tradizione delle musica da ballo inglese la band mescola una gioiosa trascinante cacofonia di suoni con una sinistra, distorta collisione del Music Hall, Lotte Lenya, Robert Wyatt ed altri elementi sonori tutti da scoprire. Non fanno sicuramente le cose a metà. Il gruppo che negli ultimi due anni ha sconvolto il mondo ella musica tradizionale inglese vincendo premi, concorsi e conquistandosi una grandissima reputazione giunge finalmente al suo primo album. Selvaggio, gioioso, perverso, tosto, sanguigno intricato, senza paure, divertente, epico e veramente grande. I Bellowhead non deludono. Prodotto da Ben Mandelson (Billy Bragg, 3 Mustaphas 3, Globestyle, ....) e Rob Keyloch, arricchito da una confezione sontuosa, si tratta di un grande album con un libretto che presenta in modo esauriente la genesi di ogni brano registrato. L’album comprende 13 canzoni e brani strumentali ispirati da una gran massa di materiali che vanno spaziano dalle guerre Napoleoniche (Rigs of the Time), al movimento dei menestrelli Americani (Jordan), dalle divinità dell’Oceano Brasiliano (Across the Line) allo spirito delle danze dell’Anglia Orientale (Sloe Gin). La voce principale del gruppo, Jon Boden, colpisce ed emoziona ricordando grandi miti del rock come Jon Anderson dei Jethro Tull, ed il gruppo suona con una maestria tecnica superba. E non è solo la il virtuosismo dei singoli a colpire ma anche l’arditezza degli arrangiamenti. I Bellowhead hanno esordito con un concerto tenutosi ad Oxford nell’aprile del 2004 come estensione del famoso duo costituito da John Spiers & Jon Boden. L’idea era di avere un gruppo di folk inglese al centro di un collettivo capace di di suonare come una big band, con uno stile a volte funky ed una sezione d’archi. Il primo concerto fu un tale successo da convincere il gruppo a continuare. Il concerto successivo al Sidmouth Festival fu la consacrazione. Poco dopo registrano un EP con 5 brani, nato a scopo promozionale ma che a furor di popolo divenne un prodotto distribuito ufficialmente sul mercato inglese ed ottenne recensioni entusiastiche. Nel 2005 il gruppo si esibisce al Celtic Connections Festival a Glasgow e poco dopo ottiene il riconoscimento di miglior gruppo dal vivo al BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Da allora il gruppo si è esibito nei principali festival inglesi di music folk & world e ha iniziato ad apparire anche sul continente con concerti a Rotschild (Germania), Sphinks (Belgio) e Gong (Torino nel settembre 2006)

English music, global vision

I’ll stick my head above the parapet for Burlesque: this is the most important album of English traditional music since Fairport Convention’s Liege & Lief. It’s even more significant. Fairport, with electric instruments and attitude, revitalised the repertoire. Nonetheless there’s an austere aspect to that groundbreaking record, a sense that, really, the song should not be performed so much as presented. Bellowhead disagree entirely and marshal their formidable resources to explore the musical, lyrical and theatrical potential of the songs and tunes. The group are described as a folk big band. Actually, they’re a huge band. Between them the 11 musicians play more than 20 instruments, and six of them sing. The horn section includes a sousaphone, the reeds a bass clarinet. There’s a frying pan amidst the percussion, a cello in the strings and, at the core, are the melodeons of John Spiers, Jon Boden’s fiddle (one of four) and his vibrant, not to say vibrating, vocals.

The arrangements and performances are stunning. ‘Death and the Lady’ encompasses both bebop and minimalism. ‘The Outlandish Knight’ expresses sonically the strange power of the words. ‘Courting too Slow’ is a triumph of melancholy, and the tunes such as ‘Frog’s Legs and Dragon’s Teeth’ are like a fine pint – delicious and satisfying.

A few days after Bellowhead appeared on the main stage, a friend who witnessed them take WOMAD by storm buttonholed me: they had the rich textures of a Cuban band, she insisted, the rhythmic dexterity of a Brazilian outfit and the melodic exuberance of an African combo. She was incredulous because this was, after all, English folk music. And English music can’t be world music, can it? Bellowhead have finally blasted that tired old prejudice into oblivion.
