John Francis Pastorius III was born on the 1st of December 1951 in Pennsylvania and grew up in Fort Lauderdale. He started playing bass at age 13 and his first big break as a bassist came in 1972 when he was asked to join the Wayne Cochran and the C.C Riders band. In 1974 he started playing with Pat Metheny and in 1976 Jaco changed the course of bass history with his astounding self-titled debut recording, Jaco Pastorius . By the same year, he had been invited to join Weather Report, where he remained until 1981, gradually becoming a third lead voice along with Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter. Outside Weather Report, he found himself in constant demand as a sessionman and producer, playing on Joni Mitchell, Blood Sweat and Tears, Paul Bley, Bireli Lagrene and Ira Sullivan. In 1981, Jaco introduced his own big band with his second solo release, Word of Mouth . As the leader of his own big band, Jaco featured his skills in composition, arranging, and production. From 1980 to 1984 he toured and recorded with this innovative band that can be heard at its best in this astonishing album.
