Milan based tenor saxophone player and composer, DANIELE CAVALLANTI, born 1952, co-leader with drummer TIZIANO TONONI of the historical band NEXUS and among the founding members of the famous ITALIAN INSTABILE ORCHESTRA, is happy to release his latest work as a leader with an unsual line up, at least for today’s standards, with two saxophones (Cavallanti’s tenor and Roberto Ottaviano’ soprano), two trombones, two basses and drums.
But who is familiar with CAVALLANTI’s work an background knows about the obvious references to Archie Shepp’s bands with two trombones, Coltrane (Olè Coltrane, Live In Seattle, Ascension), and Ornette Coleman’s works with two basses. Coleman’s quartets with Charlie Haden and David Izenzon and, later on, with Tony Falanga and Gregg Cohen, not to mention Free Jazz. It is in this creative , intense, powerful milieu, full of activism, that THE SONGLINES BAND has its his roots and takes inspiration.
The CD set list: The Dreamtime, Black Leo, Mbizo, Sean’s Tones, by Daniele Cavallanti, and The Stalkin’ Moon by Tiziano Tononi offers some powerful and magmatic music, as always dense with the essential connections to the afro-american idiom, filtered and revisited by the sensibility and creativity of all the musicians involved in the project.
