In the Ligurian pre-Alps of the San Remo valley, a very rich and original musical tradition has been carried on in the village of Ceriana. Its most significant form is a three-voice polyphony where the two higher voices are soloists, and the lower one is a drone performed by a large number of singers. This form of polyphony is suited for both the liturgical repertoire – the musical territory of the four brotherhoods in the village – and secular songs, notably "ballate".
The members of la Compagnia Sacco have been championing this tradition with enthusiasm and sensitivity, taking care to retain its most fragile aspects and authentic songs and not to violate its essence.
