The tradition of Noäls Guillannues and the ancient region of Poitou (including Vendée, originally considered Lower Poitou) remains one of the richest of France with those of Provence and Burgundy. Sacred in the first instance, 'Le chant de Nau' becomes progressively profane and vulgarized by integrating the popular tradition. The Noäls are songs of great religious inspiration typical of vigils during Advent. This repertoire has come down to us mainly through two sources: the oral transmission (still strongly present in the Vendee), and a multitude of writings relating to Christmas dating from the seventeenth century. The Guillannues or Guillanues, which have a popular matrix, were carried from house to house in the New Year and Epiphany by young people in villages in exchange for a gift.
